According to recent news released by the Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly, actor and producer Leonado DiCaprio will be starring a new movie about the multi billion online gambling industry in Costa Rica.

The tiny Central American Nation is the home to more than 200 online casinos, poker rooms and sportsbetting sites, including industry giants such as SBG Global, Absolute Poker, Ultimate Bet, BetUS.com, Sportsbook.com and many more. These operators pump millions of dollars to the Costa Rican arks by boosting specific sectors of the economy such as real estate, technology, etc and by providing employment to over 15.000 people. But even when the industry has brought benefits to the local economy, the absence of a legislation regulating the online gambling companies and their operations in Costa Rica has also created some sort of legal limbo and wild west mentality among the companies based and licensed in the country.

DiCaprio and Paramount have picked Brian Koppelman and David Levien as script writers for the new project, the veteran writers have previously teamed up to write several successful films including the 1997 movie “Rounders”,  which starred Edward Norton and Matt Damon as high stakes players in the underground poker scene. They also wrote the script for the 2005 film “Ocean’s Thirteen” directed by Steven Soderberg and starred by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle covered similar ground with their debut script for “Rounders,” which starred Edward Norton and Matt Damon as high-stakes players in the underground poker scene.

Currently, DiCaprio is involved in more than a dozen projects, including Christopher Nolan’s ‘Inception’. DiCaprio recently worked in the Martin Scorsese-directed thriller “Shutter Island,” which Paramount will release in October. No official release date has been given for this new movie, however, it’s been rumored that pre production works would begin in 2010.
