Roger Federer the best tennis player in the world again?
He should be, let’s just put it that way.
In case you didn’t know, the 2009 Wimbledon Championships just concluded with Roger Federer claiming his 15th career Grand Slam to get past tennis great Pete Sampras for the most Grand Slams won in a career.
Yes, it’s another milestone for Roger Federer. The Swiss tennis player started at the age of eight, took lessons to become better. He started to play professionally in 1998, winning his first Grand Slam in Wimbledon in 2003. Six years later, the guy now has 15, making him the guy with the most number of titles in a single career already. What’s crazier is the fact that he isn’t even done yet.
Sure, Rafael Nadal technically still is the world
no.1 tennis player in the world (although some say Nadal relinquished it to Federer after he pulled out of Wimbledon…) but now that Federer is gaining some sort of momentum, that prestigious spot he’s been sitting on for months is on the verge of being taken away from him soon.
Federer defeated Andy Roddick 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 16-14 on Centre Court at the Wimbledon Finals to pass Pete Sampras in the Grand Slam record books. Federer is now the only player in tennis history to win at least five consecutive titles at two different Grand Slam tournaments (2003-07 Wimbledon, 2004-08 US Open). He is also the only player in tennis history to win the same two Grand Slam tournaments back to back for four consecutive years (2004-07).
Federer is the only one to win at least two…
