  • Pitting Randy Couture against Mark Coleman was about as awesome as when the IFL had that faded fighter take on that has-been in a superfight.
  • It took Matt Serra less time to knock Frank Trigg out than it did Robbie Lawler. Is it time for Serra vs. BJ Penn at 170? It was damn close when they fought at 155.
  • Congrats to Chael Sonnen for utterly dominating Nate Marquardt, and a huge congrats to Sonnen for actually proving himself to be a viable contender for the 185-pound title. The dude went from zero to hero in the span of two flawless fights.
  • Demian Maia… meh.
  • Paulo Thiago is legit. Or Mike Swick has started to suck.
  • Mac Danzig was tossed a softball and came ridiculously close to striking out.
  • Is it me or was Melvin Guillard the recipient of a gift decision?
  • One more loss for Brian Stann and he’s going to lose that GI Joe action figure modeled after him.
  • Did Rolles Gracie not know he was supposed to fight in the UFC this past weekend? Was his Octagon debut some sort of prank? Dude, do some cardio.

  • Apparently Paul Buentello needs American Kickboxing Academy for cardio.
  • Of all the fighters in the UFC, Clay Guida loses the best.
  • Dear God, please, no more Mike Pierce.
  • Has no one told Alan Belcher that white guys simply look foolish with cornrows?
  • Frank Julio Fontez Ebenezer “El Jefe” Mir. Ariba!
  • BJ Penn is without a doubt some kind of fighting deity, but I definitely think Gray Maynard, Frankie Edgar and Jim Miller can beat him. However, they have to coordinate it so they all attacking him at once, i.e., Maynard comes in low, Edgar comes in high and Miller blasts him with a shotgun. Otherwise, they’re doomed.

Oh right, Brett Favre already did that.

But seriously, Quinton Rampage Jackson is returning to the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) probably to pacify Rashad Evans and UFC president Dana White.

That’s right, Jackson stated in his website that he’s returning to the organization to finish out his UFC contract, though he gave no timetable for his potential return.

Jackson outlined a series of events that began with his signing with the UFC, carried on until his recent decision to play B.A. Baracus in a feature version of ”The A-Team,” and ended with a decision to walk away from MMA.

rampage_jacksonJackson recently coached opposite Rashad Evans on the ”The Ultimate Fighter 10.” Team Rashad advanced seven of eight fighters past the first round, and both finalists came from his team. Evans came across as the mature, team-driven coach while Jackson was often portrayed is immature and aloof.

UFC president Dana White made no secret of his despise over Jackson’s decision to take ”The A-Team” gig and hold up what was supposed to be a post - ”TUF” coach vs. coach fight with Evans at UFC 107.

The event, which now features a headliner of lightweight champion BJ Penn vs. Diego Sanchez, was booked in Jackson’s hometown of Memphis, Tenn., and takes place next weekend without Jackson.

Will Diego Sanchez be BJ Penn’s Nightmare in UFC 107?

Finally, Diego ”the Nightmare” Sanchez gets a title shot this weekend.

You read it folks, Diego Sanchez will get his first shot at a title this Saturday in UFC 107 in Memphis, Tennessee where he will go after BJ Penn and the UFC lightweight championship belt wrapped around his waist.

And while BJ Penn is arguably one of the best cage fighters the UFC has ever seen, the defending lightweight champion is probably facing his toughest test at 155 pounds. Diego ”Nightmare” Sanchez is one mean and deranged individual and when he’s inside the Octagon with you, be prepared for everything.

diego_sanchezSome find it weird and amusing but there is no doubt that Diego ”Nightmare” Sanchez possesses a high level of intensity in the ring. Known for his focused chant of ”yes!” while walking towards the Octagon, Diego is known for his superb wrestling takedowns and high level of conditioning.

The Ultimate Fighter season one winner reinvented himself as an unstoppable cardio machine that won’t quit, moving forward until he wears a UFC championship belt around his waist. The 27-year-old Albuquerque, N.M. Native, with the 23-2 professional record, is on a four-fight win streak and is 2-0 since dropping down to lightweight with exciting wins over Joe Stevenson and Clay Guida.

This will mark Sanchez’s first title fight, and if the former…

Fights to Bet on in UFC 104 at the Staples Center

And we have quite a few matches that should be interesting.

In case you didn’t know, the UFC light heavyweight title will be up for grabs as Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida will defend his belt versus Mauricio Shogun Rua in UFC 104 this Saturday at the Staples Center.

Defending UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto ‘The Dragon’ Machida, unbeaten after 18 fights, have an impenetrable defense due to his Karate style of fighting as he has shown in wins over BJ Penn, Rich Franklin, Tito Ortiz, Thiago Silva and Rashad Evans, from whom he won the light heavyweight title on punches this past May.

ufc_chickThe only downside for Machida is his lack of aggressiveness. It’s a good thing he generally does not make himself vulnerable to opponents. If Shogun makes even the slightest of mistakes this weekend, expect Machida to capitalize on them.

However, Mauricio Shogun Rua is an experienced and accomplished opponent for the defending champion, and though many think he’s a bit over the hill and has dealt with numerous injuries, this former Pride FC champ has lost just one of his last seven fights. In his last two bouts, he’s beaten Chuck Liddell and Mark Coleman, two future Hall of Famers of the sport. He has also beaten the likes of Quentin Rampage Jackson, Kevin Randleman and Alistair Overeem. The big question now is, can he do it again?

Another fight to watch this weekend is this face-off between…

Nevada Athletic Commission approves use of “BJ Penn rule” for all MMA fights held in Las Vegas

Officials of the Nevada State Athletic Commission have implemented a new Instant Replay Rule for all MMA events and matches held in Las Vegas. The rule, also known as the “BJ Penn Rule”, will allow referees to replay and analyze any moment of the fight in case its needed.

According to  Athletic Commission executive Keith Kizer , the regulation will be implemented within the next 30 days and will allow the referee to review any moment of a bout before making the official call. The rule will help the referee to detect illegal moves, fouls or cheating tactics such as the use of greasing agents on the fighters’ body.

The decision of implementing this rule comes several months after Ultimate Fighter Championship fighter BJ Penn filed a complaint against  George St Pierre for the use of a slippery substance during the UFC 94. Controversy arose when Penn’s team   accused St-Pierre’s cornermen of rubbing the fighter’s  torso with Vaseline, which according to the Nevada Gaming Commission constitutes a violation of its rules. However, St-Pierre’s camp claim the rubbing was unintentional and apologized for any Vaseline that may have been transferred to his body. UFC President Dana White has said that, although he wished the incident had not happened, it had no effect on the outcome of the fight.

“Boxing rules state that you can’t have excessive greasing. But we clarified that today and made it specific to MMA, that you cannot have any type of foreign substance on your body, hair, gloves or clothing that could result in an unfair advantage. But again it is up to the referee as the sole arbiter to judge whether or not any such foul took place and if it did, how it should be handled.” said Kizer.

The new rule will be implemented starting on October 2009.

Kenny Florian: "I Was Winning Until BJ Beat The Piss Out Of Me"

Lightweight contender Kenny Florian may have been defeated in his UFC 101 scrap against BJ Penn, but according to a recent radio interview, the Massachusetts native feels he was ahead on the scorecards until they actually started fighting. “I was winning until BJ beat the piss out of me,” said Florian, who for four rounds managed to batter the Hawaiian’s fists with his head before succumbing to a choke. “I mean, up until when the referee said ‘go’, I was kicking his ass. You could see it on BJ’s face.” The night ended with Florian tapping out. But the TUF 1 veteran insists that before that, and before the referee even said ‘go’, he was in Penn’s head and on the verge of victory. “Honestly, I had him right where I wanted him, right where we’d planned on him being. I mean, if not for the hellacious beating I took on the feet for the duration of Rounds 1 through 3, and the takedown and dominance he exerted over me on the ground in Round 4, I would’ve at least gotten the decision.”
