Observations From My Couch: UFC 109 "Ultimate Disgrace"

  • Pitting Randy Couture against Mark Coleman was about as awesome as when the IFL had that faded fighter take on that has-been in a superfight.
  • It took Matt Serra less time to knock Frank Trigg out than it did Robbie Lawler. Is it time for Serra vs. BJ Penn at 170? It was damn close when they fought at 155.
  • Congrats to Chael Sonnen for utterly dominating Nate Marquardt, and a huge congrats to Sonnen for actually proving himself to be a viable contender for the 185-pound title. The dude went from zero to hero in the span of two flawless fights.
  • Demian Maia… meh.
  • Paulo Thiago is legit. Or Mike Swick has started to suck.
  • Mac Danzig was tossed a softball and came ridiculously close to striking out.
  • Is it me or was Melvin Guillard the recipient of a gift decision?
  • One more loss for Brian Stann and he’s going to lose that GI Joe action figure modeled after him.
  • Did Rolles Gracie not know he was supposed to fight in the UFC this past weekend? Was his Octagon debut some sort of prank? Dude, do some cardio.

Predictions For UFC 109: "Attack of the Olds"

UFC 109 approaches, and with its star-studded headlining bout of Oldie McOld versus Captain Oldenstein, one thing becomes more apparent than ever before: holy cow has Zuffa run out of worthy headliners. Granted, Randy Couture and Mark Coleman are ex-champs, but they’re… how do you say it… ah yes, freakin’ old (and pretty irrelevant). So here we go, another UFC that means nothing - unless you’re into dudes who fought in World War I and who are getting perilously close to collecting Social Security checks. Predictions:

  • Matt Serra is facing Frank Trigg. Why? Who knows. But now we get to see the man who inspired the cast of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” wreck a man who posed nude for some gay magazine.
  • Demian Maia is going to work some top-level jiu-jitsu magic on Dan Miller. Until, of course, Miller punches him in the face. Then the Brazilian is going to go flying!
  • Paulo Thiago over Mike Swick via concussion grenade and submachine gun. BOPA!
  • The winner of Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnen gets to the winner of Anderson Silva vs. Vitor Belfort. So in essence, whoever survives on Saturday night gets to die at a later date.
  • Randy Couture wins out of sheer oldness.

Officials of the Ultimate Fighting Championship have released the official fight card for UFC 109: Relentless, taking place on February 6th, 2010, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Coleman moved to Japan shortly after, to compete in the Japanese promotion PRIDE Fighting Championships, where he won the PRIDE 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix tournament defeating Masaaki Satake, Akira Shoji, Kazuyuki Fujita, and Igor Vovchanchyn.

The event will be co headlined by a welterweight rematch between welterweight contender Josh Koscheck and Brazilian fighter Paulo Thiago. Other fights on the UFC 109 card include former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra vs. Frank Trigg, and Nate Marquardt vs. Chael Sonnenn.

Observations From My Couch: UFC 103 "Bye-Bye CroCop"

Filed Under: Boxing, CA, Cole Miller, Entertainment, Fights, Frank Trigg, Hermes Franca, Jim Miller, Josh Koscheck, Junior dos Santos, KOs, MMA, Martin Kampmann, Mirko CroCop, Paul Daley, Rich Franklin, Sports, Steroids, UFC, Vitor Belfort, blogs, google, s by: admin

  • After the beating suffered at the hands of Vitor Belfort, Rich Franklin must really be hating Brazilians right now.
  • After the beating suffered at the hands (and knees) of Junior dos Santos, Mirko CroCop must really be hating that he can’t do steroids for his US fights.
  • After the beating suffered at the hands of Paul Daley, Martin Kampmann must really be hating that no one at Xtreme Couture taught him how to do takedowns.
  • After the beating suffered at the hands of Josh Koscheck, Frank Trigg must really be hating the fact that he’s gotten old.
  • Holy crap did Hermes Franca look out of shape and untrained.
  • After the beating suffered at the hands of Efrain Escudero, Cole Miller must really be hating all that time spent practicing jiu-jitsu instead of boxing.
  • After that beating suffered at the hands of Tomasz Drwal, Drew McFedries must really be hating the Polish lack of vowels in their names.
  • Jim Miller’s jiu-jitsu is so good, he doesn’t even have to touch you to dislocate your shoulder with a kimura.

Predictions for UFC 103: "Come On, CroCop, Don’t Mess This Up"

Filed Under: CA, Fights, Frank Trigg, Games, Josh Koscheck, KOs, MMA, Martin Kampmann, Mirko CroCop, Paul Daley, Rich Franklin, TUF, UFC, UNC, Vitor Belfort, blogs, google, s by: admin

Just a few scant days after UFC Fight Night 19 and the TUF 10 premiere comes UFC 103, a pay-per-view extravaganza featuring no title bouts and no match-ups of any real consequence. Wahoo! Fighting at a catch-weight of 195 are Vitor Belfort and Rich Franklin, because 195 pounds is cool and hip and all the kids are doing it, while Mirk CroCop returns to hopefully not get clobbered. So, predictions!

  • The last seven fights Tyson Griffin has taken part in have ended via decision, so I’m going to go out on a limb and say he’s going to defeat jiu-jitsu black belt Hermes Franca by… Falcon punch!
  • Josh Koscheck and Frank Trigg are two solid wrestlers who like to throw punches and get knocked out. Look for a double-KO in this one.
  • Martin Kampmann is Danish, which means when you bite into him you get a mouthful of frosting and some raisins. Brit striker Paul Daley hates raisins.
  • CroCop is going to TKO the less-experienced Junior dos Santos, which sets up a nice revenge match for a future UFC between the Croatian and Senior dos Santos.
  • Belfort is going to hit Franklin so hard, Franklin will no longer be qualified to teach high school arithmetic - only gym or special education.
