Bellator Fighting Championships announced the signing of noted Mexican soap opera star Roger Huerta to their upcoming eight-man lightweight tournament today. Known for his recurring role as an itinerant worker in “La Banana del Amor”, and for his gritty portrayal of Juan the Bumblebee in “El Beso de la Rosquilla”, Huerta last saw combat at UFC Fight Night 19 in September, where he lost a close split decision to Gray Maynard. But that, plus a loss via decision to Kenny Florian at UFC 87 and a loss to Ryan Schultz back in 2004, mark the only blemishes on what is generally considered an impressive fighting career, and Huerta is the first MMA competitor to grace both the covers of Sports Illustrated and Telenovela Weekly. “We are very pleased to have Roger Huerta join our 155-pound tournament,” said Bellator Mega Jefe Bjorn Rebney, who punctuated his excitement by throwing a sombrero to the ground and dancing around it with a rose in his mouth.

On Friday, February 19, stars such as Tony Hawk, Christian Slater, Brad Garrett, Jason Alexander, Joanna Krupa, Montel Williams, Donnie Wahlberg, Marlon Waynes and Slash were among the 39 players who competed in the $540 event in The Venetian Poker Room - raising more than $42,000 for Three Square, a food charity in Southern Nevada.

This inaugural poker event started off on the right foot with over 872 poker players registering for the $5,000 No-Limit Hold’em Tournament with many well-known names in the international poker scene.

Friday’s tournament saw some big celebrity names battle it out on the poker tables including:

AJ Buckley from CSI NY, Nicholas Gonzalez and Shaun Sipos of CW’s Melrose Place and UFC fighter Tito Ortiz.

Christian Slater was amazingly friendly and a fan favorite. He kept jumping up from the poker table to take photos with the fans lining the aisles. A bounty was put on Daniel Negreanu and the prize - a signed guitar by Slash - went to actor Donnie Wahlberg. Donnie said he was going to give the guitar to his son.

Zak “Zakooza” Alameddine from New York won the event and a ticket into next year’s PokerStars.net Caribbean Adventure in the Bahamas. He beat top poker pros such as Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth, world champion Joe Cada, Gavin Griffin, Dennis Phillips, Chris Moneymaker and Vanessa Rousso.

Baseball legend, Orel Hershiser, came second winning a seat in the NAPT Mohegan Sun event in April.  John Beveridge from Henderson, Nevada, came third and won a seat into today’s $5,000 PokerStars.net North American Poker Tour Venetian Main Event which is set to attract more than 800 players.

After playing in the tournament, the stars headed up to TAO Nightclub for cocktails, hors dourves and a special musical performance by recording artist T-Pain.

-    Joanna Krupa mingled with  Tony Hawk then turned her attention to T-Pain and danced to the music.

-    Melrose Place stars Nicholas Gonzalez and Shaun Sipos also hung out in the VIP area and spoke about how much they love Tao and The Palazzo and can’t wait to come back.

Next up: Brendan Barrett of Brutal MMA and Joe Abouata of Wilkie’s Warriors in a heavyweight bout. Abouata is what you’d get if you crossed a human’s DNA with a Harley Davidson, but Barrett’s always been a tough, top-level guy. He comes out and establishes control early, getting the Wilkie Warrior down and grinding him throughout the first, and tapping him with a guillotine from mount in the second. The official time of the tap out is :45 of Round 2. The ever-popular Nabih Barakat of Serra/Longo takes to the cage to face the Armory’s Edson Barboza. Yikes. Barboza is definitely some kind of ringer, as he wades in and clips Barakat with a right and follows him down with some hellacious leather. Barakat is so messed up, he’s trying to work his guard even after the ref has pulled Barboza off, and Kevin Mulhall has to hold his ankles while Dr. Wulkan struggles to get him to snap out of it. The official time of the KO is 1:09 of the first round. It’s time for Brazil vs. Brazil, with Vagner Fernandes of Gold Team taking on Andre Gusmao of Ricardo Almeida’s School for Gifted Grapplers. As an aside, Gusmao is also a skilled capoeira practitioner, which enabled him to dominate when he fought in the IFL but availed him naught in his time in the UFC. It doesn’t avail him much here, either, as Fernandes rocks him with a right and proceeds to use his face as a punching bag. Yet Gusmao is tough, and he gains dominate position on the ground, flattens Fernandes out, and drops the hammer until the ref steps in at 3:25 of Round 1.

Predictions for UFC 110: "Insert Sarcastic Australian Stereotype Here"

Filed Under: ACC, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Ben Rothwell, Brock Lesnar, CA, Games, MMA, Michael Bisping, Mirko CroCop, Other, Ryan Bader, UFC, Wanderlei Silva, b, blogs, d, eve, google, hot, ing, ispin, predictions, s by: admin

G’day mate! Seems the UFC has ventured on down unda for their latest installment, and it looks to be a decent night of walloping for convicts and Americans alike. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Cain Velasquez get to pretend that Brock Lesnar gives a crap about defending his belt, while the once-feared Wanderlei Silva and the once-relevant Michael Bisping get another shot at salvaging their waning career. So put another shrimp on the barbie, ’cause here are some predictions!

  • Mirko CroCop gets another shot in the Octagon, and as it’s not on US soil (and under the watchful eye of an athletic commission with a post-fight drug test requirement), he actually stands a chance at winning.
  • I bet Ben Rothwell thinks back on those days when he dominated in the IFL and gets all wistful and teary.
  • Keith Jardine’s still alive? Ryan Bader via ground and pound.
  • George Sotiropoulos may be a local, but Joe Stevenson will likely be the crowd favorite an account of him looking very much like a koala bear.
  • Bisping is young and despised. Silva is old and beloved. Ultimately, that means that the person everyone doesn’t want to win will win.
  • Velasquez is young and moderately liked. Nogueira is Nogueira, and he is going to kill him.

Brock Lesnar will fight again for the UFC this 2010

seth-edward-oneal.jpgGood. That means all that weight Frank Mir put on won’t be for nothing after all.

That’s also good news for UFC fans who thought they’ve seen the last of Brock Lesnar in the UFC after only four fights inside the Octagon.

And in case you didn’t get that yet, Brock Lesnar is good to go this year after being sidelined by what was first believed to be mono, but later revealed to be an intestinal disorder, diverticulitis.

According to his head trainer Greg Nelson, Lesnar will be definitely back. ”Brock Lesnar is definitely coming back to fight,” Nelson said. ”And he’s just kind of coming up slowly, training, trying to get his body ready and being smart with his recovery.”

Nelson is the leader of the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy in St. Paul, where Lesnar joined in 2007 when he began his pursuit in MMA.

As one of the few with access to the very private heavyweight, Nelson has been communicating with Lesnar through emails, texts and occasional phone calls.

”He’s been going into the doctor and making sure everything is going well for him and he’ll continue to go in for a couple more tests to make sure he is 100 percent ready to train when he starts up,” Nelson said. ”He still has a few more things to go through.”

UFC President Dana White has described Lesnar’s illness as potentially career-ending, but Nelson believed right then and there that’s not the case. He already believed then that Lesnar is the type of individual with the strength to pull through the…

Despite Chael Sonnen’s impressive defeat of top contender Nate Marquardt at UFC 109, manager, translator and aspiring matchmaker Ed Soares – the English-speaking front man for UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva – doesn’t feel the American deserves a shot at his ward’s belt.
